It is the early 18th century, and the Great Northern War is underway. King Augustus II the Strong has been dethroned; nevertheless, he spends his time carefree—attending balls and banquets at his court in Dresden. Countess Anna Hoym participates in these festivities, and the former king falls in love with her. She divorces her husband for his sake and begins to reign supreme among Augustus’s courtiers. However, Augustus proves fickle in his affections, and court intrigues drive Anna away from her unfaithful lover.
