The Shot
A psychological study of a man consumed by an obsessive thirst for revenge. The film’s protagonists are officers stationed at a provincial garrison. In their off-duty hours, they either drink, play cards, or spin long-winded tales. All of them are intrigued by Count Silvio, at whose home they gather. The Count is a mysterious recluse and an unrivaled master of the pistol. He was once the ornament of St. Petersburg’s high society salons. His career was cut short by a duel in which he not only humiliated his opponent but also treated him with utter disdain. He chose not to fire his shot; instead, he vanished, resolving to claim that deferred shot at the very moment when his adversary would cling most desperately to life…
