Lady of the Cammelias
Camille (1994) is a screen adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’s novel of the same title, featuring a cast of Poland’s leading actors. It is a melodrama that is sure not to disappoint admirers of the stories penned by the French author.
The story unfolds in mid-19th-century Paris. The film chronicles the life of Marguerite Gautier—a high-society courtesan frequently seen in the city’s salons. She is known for always attending opera performances with a bouquet of white or red flowers: camellias. Upon her death, her estate is put up for auction. Among the bidders is the writer Alexandre Dumas, who purchases a particular book. It turns out that this volume holds immense sentimental value for a certain man—Armand Duval, who was Marguerite’s lover. Their romance ended tragically; he requests the return of the book, and in doing so, recounts to the writer the story of their ill-fated love.
